Riding to work each day on the old canal cutting through town,
Desert dust and car exhaust hovers in the air and into my nose.
Rows of cubicles slowly come to life (a chorus of clicks and groans),
Water cooler talk and extra bathroom breaks help the day to go by.
I remember the autumn of wining and dining on the Seine.
The red and yellow leaves are falling down all around me like the rain.
From happy hour time with appetizers free and drinks that are only half price,
‘Til last call lingers on in the glow of the blue TV screen light.
There’s no “Case of You” tonight and no “Old Man” curled contently by my side.
Just an alarm set for 5 am so that I can be to work before the sun.
